Choosing Hope and Action in Times of Crisis

At various points in life, I’ve found myself wondering how I can truly make a difference. Most recently, this question weighed heavily on me as I watched the devastating toll of Australia’s bushfire season. The massive loss of human, animal, and plant life was heartbreaking, compounded by inadequate political responses that seemed to ignore the root causes of this unfolding disaster.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed—plugging into the collective anger, disbelief, and despair can leave us powerless. Yet, amidst this chaos, I am reminding myself: in every moment, I have a choice. My choices matter. If we all collectively embraced this power, we could effect significant change.

The Power of Small, Conscious Choices

We vote not only at the ballot box but with our daily actions and dollars. For instance, every time I opt for a disposable coffee cup instead of remembering my reusable one, I’m prioritising convenience over the environmental cost. While society often emphasises jobs, productivity, and economic growth as paramount, deep down, we know what’s truly at stake.

In response, I’ve started making more conscious decisions in my own life:

  • Reducing packaging and single-use plastics
  • Supporting growers and local producers of good chemical-free food
  • Donating to charities providing relief on the ground and supporting reforestation programs
  • Writing to my local MP for the first time to share my concerns and advocate for change

Energy, Intention, and Collective Healing

Beyond tangible actions, I’ve also been focusing on energetic and vibrational contributions. Energy healing can help shift heavy, fear-based thoughts and emotions—both individually and collectively. It offers relief to sentient beings and helps balance the earth and its elements.

At a recent chant event I led in Sydney, our group experienced the profound power of collective voices offering love and intention through mantra. Together, we created a shared energy of healing and support—a reminder of the incredible service we can provide through love and prayer. The experience was deeply moving, underscoring the unique impact of collective action on an energetic level.

Kale Soup Recipe, Soul Light

To be honest, becoming someone who shares recipes was never on my radar. Sure, I had a fleeting childhood dream of becoming a chef, but that quickly faded. Cooking with kale? That wasn’t even a thought until a few years ago, when a friend extolled its health benefits. It was their encouragement (and a little curiosity) that led me to experiment with this vibrant green. Fast forward, and now kale is a star ingredient in my kitchen and I’m sharing my healthy kale soup recipe.

As someone passionate about maintaining a healthy body to support my meditation, energy healing, and spiritual practices, I’ve come to appreciate how nourishing meals can fuel my holistic lifestyle. Kale, packed with nutrients and versatility, has become a regular feature in my dinner rotation.

One recipe that stands out is this delightful kale soup. It’s healthy, fast, and ridiculously easy to prepare—perfect for those busy days when you still want something comforting and nutritious. This recipe has not only become a personal favorite but also a hit in my local community.

Easy Kale Soup Recipe

Here’s how you can whip up this warm bowl of goodness:

Ingredients

  • 1 bunch of fresh kale, washed and chopped, heavier parts of stalk removed
  • olive oil
  • ginger, 1 inch, chopped
  • turmeric, I inch, chopped
  • 1 stock cube vegetarian, or cup of vegetable stock
  • 2 zucchinis diced
  • coriander, 1 bunch
  • broccoli or broccolini, 2 cups
  • 1 lime, zested
  • 1 lemon

Instructions
1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
2. Sauté the ginger and turmeric for around 2 mins until fragrant, careful not to burn.
3. Add the zucchini, fry until it starts to brown.
4. Add broccoli or broccolini. And the stock cube and stir. (Add vegetable stock at next step if already in a liquid form).
5. Add kale and coriander and cook for another 5 minutes, until wilted. Cover pot with lid to assist with wilting of leaves and reduction of volume.
6. Add lime zest, juice of whole lime, and juice of half a lemon.
7. Once greens have reduced in volume, add approx 2 cups of water. Simmer for 2-3 minutes until greens are cooked.
8. Blend the soup to your desired consistency—smooth or chunky. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Serve hot or cold and enjoy the goodness!

Kale is a powerhouse of vitamins A, C, and K, as well as antioxidants and fiber. In recent years I’ve read it’s best in moderation.

For a simple practice, focus on your breath: inhale for a count of three and exhale for a count of six. Visualise breathing in life-giving oxygen from the trees and exhaling gratitude in return.

As multidimensional beings, our energy centers—like chakras, meridians, and the aura—can become clogged over time. Energy healing practices can help release stuck emotions and restore balance, opening you up to greater clarity and vitality.

7. Explore Mantras and Chanting

The repetition of sacred sounds can transform your vibration. Sanskrit mantras, such as Oṁ Gaṁ Gaṇapataye Namaḥ, are designed to clear obstacles and create stability. Chanting or listening to mantras can bring calmness to your mind, reduce stress, and support spiritual growth.

There are many mantras, invoked at different times for connecting with different energies. The chant, Oṁ Gaṁ Gaṇapataye Namaḥ, invokes the qualities of energy associated with Hindu deity Gaṇeśa  – to clear the obstacles that might present themselves on our path. It is also the energy associated with the Mūlādhāra chakra – of stability, foundations, new ventures, and moving beyond duality, to touch on a few other aspects. I play this in my home space, and chant this at specific times when I feel I need extra assistance to move through a particular challenge. You can listen to a sample of it on the Mantra album.

8. Sound Yoga (Nāda Yoga) Guided Practice

The vibrational power of sound-based practices offers a range of health benefits, particularly through stimulating the vagus nerve. This gentle activation supports anxiety relief, eases pain, and uplifts mood by engaging the parasympathetic nervous system. As a result, your body releases feel-good chemicals like oxytocin, nitric oxide, dopamine, and endorphins, helping you feel balanced and revitalised.

9. Follow What Brings You Joy

One of the simplest yet most profound pieces of advice is to do what brings you joy. Start small and follow the breadcrumb trail of things that light you up—you may be surprised at where they lead.

The other day, I woke up feeling an overwhelming sense of loneliness and isolation. It struck me as strange because I have a loving family, deep friendships, and a supportive spiritual community. Yet, that sense of aloneness crept in unbidden, leaving me pondering how many others experience this as their regular “normal.”
